AI slop is the term for generic, low-quality, AI-generated content produced at scale with no editorial standards. Merriam-Webster added it to the dictionary in late 2025. Google has been quietly deranking it since mid-2024. At this point it is the single biggest quality problem in B2B marketing, creator content, and most of what now passes for a company blog.

This is a practical field guide to AI slop. What it is. Why it keeps happening. How to spot it in under a minute. And the infrastructure that actually stops it from shipping.

Slop is not a prompting problem. It is a rules problem. Until your brand voice lives as code a system can enforce, every AI draft drifts toward the most generic possible version of your idea. The fix is not "use AI less" or "prompt better." It is a guardrail layer that blocks anything below your quality floor before it ships.

What Is AI Slop?

AI slop is content that technically exists but functionally says nothing. It reads like something. A blog post. A LinkedIn update. A marketing email. But it carries no specific point of view, no verifiable claims, no evidence that a human with judgment was involved.

The term picked up momentum in 2024 when Facebook flooded with AI-generated images of shrimp Jesus, fake veterans, and fabricated crafts. It entered business writing when every SaaS blog started sounding identical. "In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, businesses need to leverage cutting-edge solutions to drive meaningful impact."

You have read that sentence before. You have read it hundreds of times. It is AI slop even when a human wrote it, because the shape is the slop, not the author.

AI slop vs. AI-assisted content

Not all AI-generated content is slop. The difference is whether a system is enforcing standards on the output.

  • AI slop: AI produces content. The content ships. There is no enforcement layer between the two.
  • AI-assisted content: AI produces a draft. A system (or a human with rigor) checks it against measurable criteria. Voice. Structure. Evidence density. Forbidden phrases. Tone calibration. Content that fails gets rejected before anyone reads it.

The same LLM can produce both. The difference is what sits between the draft and the publish button.

Why AI Slop Happens

Large language models are pattern matchers. They produce the most statistically likely continuation of the text you prompt them with. When you prompt "write a blog post about content marketing," they produce the most common sentence patterns from the millions of content-marketing blog posts they were trained on.

Those common patterns are, by definition, the average. The mean. The median. The most forgettable possible version of the idea, because it is the version most written.

This is the root cause of AI slop. Without structure, AI regresses to the training-data mean. And the training-data mean is the collective output of every mediocre content marketer who ever wrote a post about content marketing.

Three specific failure modes flow from this root cause.

  1. No voice specification. The brand has no measurable definition of "sounds like us." The AI guesses. Its guess is the mean.
  2. No evidence requirement. The prompt does not require concrete claims with supporting data. The AI produces abstract assertions because abstract assertions are safer on average.
  3. No rejection protocol. Output that falls below threshold ships anyway, because no one defined a threshold. The editor is busy. "Close enough" becomes the standard.

7 Signs You Are Reading AI Slop

AI slop is detectable in under a minute if you know what to look for. Here are the seven highest-signal markers, ranked by how reliably they predict automated origin.

1. Empty authority claims

Phrases like "innovative solutions," "cutting-edge technology," "world-class expertise," "meaningful impact." Count them per 1,000 words. If the ratio is nonzero, no one with editorial judgment reviewed the content.

2. Abstraction without evidence

Every claim sits one level too general. "We help companies grow" instead of "We reduced client acquisition cost by 34% across 12 accounts in Q3." The first is furniture. The second is a fact. Slop is made of furniture.

3. Structural uniformity

Every post follows the same shape. Provocative question. Three subheads with alliterative titles. Bulleted list. CTA. The structure has become so template-coded that the structure itself signals AI origin.

4. Tonal flatness

The piece has no emotional register. No irritation, no conviction, no specific stance that would cost something to hold. AI slop is temperature-zero. Neither hot nor cold. Human writing that matters always has temperature.

5. No unique claims

Every sentence could have been written by anyone in the industry. Nothing is specific to this company, this founder, this week, this customer. The post is a stock-photo version of a point of view.

6. "However, although, furthermore" density

LLMs over-index on transitional academic language. If a paragraph has three of these in four sentences, you are reading a machine approximation of "thoughtful."

7. Compulsive em-dash usage

Not all em-dashes are AI slop. But their overuse is a strong signal. When every sentence has an em-dash inserting a "nuanced" clause, the writer (human or machine) is mimicking sophistication instead of earning it. Natural writing uses em-dashes sparingly. Some of the best writing uses none.

Any one of these markers can appear in good writing. When three or more appear together, you are reading AI slop.

The AI Slop Test (Measurable)

How to Fix AI Slop

The fix is not to stop using AI. That ship has sailed. Every serious content team is using AI for drafts, research, ideation, and in many cases final copy. The fix is to build the enforcement layer between the draft and the publish button.

A functional anti-slop system has four components.

1. Voice extracted as code, not documented as a PDF

Your brand voice has to exist as a specification an LLM can load at inference time. Not as a 30-page PDF that writers are supposed to "internalize." In practice this means a CLAUDE.md-style file containing:

  • Cadence rules (average sentence length, clause density, passive-voice budget)
  • Signature vocabulary (terms that should appear; terms that should never appear)
  • Exemplar sentences (ten to twenty lines of verified on-brand writing that the model can pattern-match against)
  • Forbidden phrases (explicit rejection list)

2. Guardrails that block on violation

Every piece of generated content runs through automated checks before it reaches human review. Not flags. Blocks. Content that uses "leverage" as a verb does not get sent back with a note. It does not ship. Content with proof density below the brand threshold does not ship. Content that scores off-tone does not ship.

This is the enforcement layer that does not exist in most AI content pipelines, which is why most AI content pipelines produce slop.

3. Structural requirements tied to brand claim

If your brand is positioned as authority-driven, every claim above a certain abstraction level has to be supported by a metric, a mechanism, a named example, or a logical framework. This is a structural rule, enforced programmatically. The AI cannot say "our approach improves outcomes" without being required to specify which outcomes, by how much, measured how.

4. Human review only at the strategy layer

Once the guardrails handle the 40+ line-level checks that used to consume editor time, human review moves up the stack. Editors review whether the piece is about the right thing, not whether it contains "synergy." That is the only way content scales without quality collapsing. You automate the checks that do not require taste. Human taste is spent on what actually requires it.

There is an argument floating around B2B content strategy that slop does not matter because nobody reads blog posts anyway. This is wrong in two expensive ways.
